Old Sheffield Plate
The discovery of Sheffield Plating, or the combining of silver with copper, was accidentally recognized by Thomas Boulsover in 1742. While employed as a cutler, he was repairing the handle of a knife. Accidentally, he overheated the silver and copper in the haft, and realized that at this temperature the two metals adhered. The industry of Sheffield Plating was born.
